About Shannon Calderon Primeau

Shannon Yolanda Calderon Primeau was born in Los Angeles, California, on September 23, 1969, to Shirley and George Calderon Ochoa, and graduated from Northwest Classen High School in 1987. She was fortunate to study dance with Patrick Swayze in California, Flamenco with Maria Benitez in New Mexico, and Ruben Romero, whom she trained with for years during Albuquerque's Flamenco Festival.

Shannon was a featured dancer and choreographer for the Opera Ole with the Canterbury Chorale Society and the OKC's Philharmonic Orchestra. She guest starred with Edgar Cruz in the 2011 season premiere of "Latin Rhythms" at the Civic Center. She toured as the featured dancer with the late flamenco guitar master Ruben Romero, was featured at San Diego's California Performing Arts Theater, and in Flamenco videos for PBS Television. She was honored as one of Oklahoma's official Artists in Residence, was an instructor with the National Endowment for the Arts Creative Communities program, and was inducted into OCCC's Hall of Fame in 2010. She was proud of her Mexican-American heritage and became a well-respected Hispanic woman business owner who flourished in her community.

Shannon's family were pioneers in Oklahoma City's Hispanic community. Her father, George Calderon Ochoa, founded the KZUE, "La Tremenda Radio Mexico," and OKC's first Spanish Movie Theater at the "Yale" on SW 25th. Shannon pioneered her legacy when she opened her one-room dance studio at May and NW 36th in 1997. She taught here for several years before opening Everything Goes Dance Studio in the Plaza District in 2004, located in a family-owned building that was renovated to become a studio. The studio offered ballet, tap, jazz, pointe, hip hop, Mexican Folklorico, and Flamenco. Here is where she founded the dance troupe Flamenco Fantastico! Shannon's mission for her studio was simple: if a child had a passion to dance, regardless of ability to pay, she would find a dance scholarship for that student; that child would dance.

In October 2014, Shannon was given the devastating news that she had a very aggressive form of uterine cancer and that it would be terminal. She would endure several surgeries, chemotherapy, medications, and sleepless, tearful days and nights before it claimed her life on May 12, 2015.

Shannon's final wish was to have a city-wide dance festival that would incorporate dance at its finest, where all could participate. She spoke of this dream with her niece, Erika Vasquez, and choreographer, Hui Cha Poos – and in 2022, it became a reality; the first Calderon Dance Festival happened in the 16th Street Plaza District.
